About this Talk
Hooking a reader is easy. Getting them to stay beyond the hook and read to the end of your book…that’s hard.
The world is filled with attention-grabbing hooks, and the days of waiting for a story to unfold are long past. Novelists need to engage readers from the start, not with a flash-bang opening, but by effectively grounding the reader in the story’s opening, inviting her to enter the world, and making her care about a protagonist before even getting to know her.
In Beyond the Hook, you’ll learn three essential elements of story craft: the tangible, the intangible, and the secret ingredient to draw your reader in and make sure she stays to the end. I’ll give you a take-home writing prompt to bring concepts into practice, and we’ll have time to answer your questions.
